The Carkeek CF520 is the very latest in hull design from the Carkeek drawing board. Hot off the heels of the super successful 40ft RAN, and using the TP52 as the benchmark to be improved on without the constraints of class rules the radical hull form has demonstrated that it is clearly more efficient in terms of the hull construction and also providing a more stable platform in terms of pitch in a seaway.
The CF 520 is a lighter, stiffer, faster, higher stability platform than a TP52, with increased level of control, reliability and flexibility to mode, along with an emphasis on ergonomics, comfort and dryness offshore.
Although clearly designed with offshore in mind, with detail on waterproofing, water ballast and deck ergonomics, she is still very competitive inshore.
Lighter, with more sail area and more righting moment that the TP52, she performs well in a breeze and offwind are her specialities. A large amount of grip with the twin rudder system gives the opportunity to push even harder at higher heel angles with no fear of letting go.
OYSTERCATCHER XXXV was built by the hugely experienced specialist team at Fibre mechanics in Lymington UK. The composite structure was then transported to Ipswich to be fitted out by Fox’s boatyard and refit facility, more famed for their work on the prestigious Oyster Yachts brand.
She was painted there, and the electronics, hydraulics, engineering and systems were fitted by specialists in their areas. The yacht has been very well appointed and gives a unique opportunity for the next owner to take on a proven well sorted vessel in near to new condition ready to race and win with a huge saving on a new build.
OYSTERCATCHER XXXV performs well and is very fast in a breeze, although most of the ’21 season, with the exception of the Fastnet and 1 day of Cowes Week, she was sailed in light or very light conditions.
The design incorporates a water ballast system which carries a small IRC rating premium giving a choice of configuration. For the ’22 season, in conjunction with her designer, the keel bulb was optimized so the all up weight of the vessel closely matches design displacement. The vessel has only been used 3 times during the ’22 season while her owner has been dealing with health issues and sailing his other yachts.
