Tough, seaworthy, family friendly, and beautiful, Volcano is a yacht capable of crossing any ocean in comfort and style. Conceived on the same drafting table that would later produce the Swan 651, German Frers' elegant lines turn heads every time she leaves the harbor. Whether plying the waters of Puget Sound, gunkholing in Southeast Alaska or beating up the coast of Mexico, her capabilities are astounding. A rugged aluminum hull and deck provide exceptional strength. Her warm, roomy interior will accommodate family, friends or charter guests. And her rig catches the wind and powers Volcano to the crest of the next wave.

Volcano was designed by German Frers and built by Derecktor Shipyards in Mamaroneck, NY for the venerable yachtsman Llwyd Ecclestone. She is one of a series of ocean racers built for Ecclestone including Dyanamite, Kodiak, Runaway, and Bikini whose purpose was for comfortable and safe cruising and to win the Newport to Bermuda Race. Volcano is now available for purchase: a quality yacht of pedigree sure to provide quality sailing moments and memories for her next owner.

Volcano is a uniquely versatile cruiser/racer. She has been successfully cruised by three different Pacific Northwest couple/owners with small children as crew. These families have sailed from Mexico to Alaska, enjoying the space and security of this well constructed aluminum yacht. She has four cabins, berths for ten and space for another two on the salon settees. A few years ago, while owned by my business partner, I had the opportunity to enjoy sailing and cruising Volcano.

For a weekend getaway, we loaded up three families and sailed from Seattle to the SYC outstation at Port Madison. Between the six adults and five children, we all had plenty of space and our own cabin. Once docked, the kids enjoyed sailing an Optimist dinghy we’d transported over on the foredeck (there was ample space for another two) while the adults socialized in the cockpit and on deck. As viewed from the bluff above, Volcano looked absolutely elegant and a perfect platform for the enjoyment of those aboard. That evening the very ample galley produced a banquet for the entire crew seated around the large salon table. As the kids disappeared to the forward cabins for games and movies, the parents relaxed with after-dinner beverages and sea stories. With her broad, uncluttered, and flat decks Volcano can also be loaded up with crew for day sails or racing.

One day we headed out to Lake Washington where I helped sail with a girl-scout troop. The sixteen squealing girls and their half dozen adult leaders had a ball working the helm, winches, and sheets as we tacked and gybed; an awesome teamwork exercise. We also sailed a half dozen “fun races” in the Elliot Bay Downtown Sailing Series, often finishing first. It didn’t take long to find crew for Volcano. Once the word was out, everyone wanted to come and sail the big, beautiful boat. Even with twenty six aboard she never felt crowded and everyone joined in the fun of sailing.

I was also able to experience how manageable Volcano is with a small crew. My wife, two year old son and I sailed her from Seattle to Port Ludlow and back one November weekend. As my wife steered, I easily set and trimmed the sails. Self tailing halyard/reefing winches make this a manageable task. Her wide, flat deck and predictable motion underway makes for easy and secure linehandling. Unlike many racing boats, she’s blessed with a center-cockpit. The cockpit dodger provides good protection from the elements and a sheltered companionway. A second smaller cockpit with dodger and companionway are aft and offer private access to the owner’s stateroom. With this arrangement, she would be well suited for charter work.

On another weekend, we did an overnight with friends to Blake Island. Volcano again proved herself extremely comfortable yet easy to manage and always elegant. Reflecting on my times aboard this great yacht I can truthfully say “In forty years of sailing, some of my fondest sailing/cruising memories are of racing and cruising Volcano.” Surely the richness of sailing is all about these kind of moments and memories. A versatile yacht like Volcano offers a quality sailing experience to be enjoyed in the company of extended family and friends without the requirement of their assistance to sail as a couple when so desired.
