Unable to find a modern, Eco-friendly craft they could use for cocktail cruising, picnicking and fishing on Narragansett Bay and for trailering to other bays and lakes, electronics engineer Rufus Van Gruisen and his yacht designer son, Rogan, decided to create their own. With the collaboration of naval architect Matt Smith of Barrington, Rhode Island, the result became the eCraft 20. While the prototype was built with glass-fiber vacuum
bagged over a strip cedar core, in Newport, Rhode Island, the production models will be foam cored and manufactured in Bristol; Rhode Island's boat building hub.
The 20ft eCraft comfortably seats eight adults, cruises at up to 8 Knots and can carry battery capacity to last all day. The sophisticated motor controller gives a clear indication of remaining battery capacity as well as the remaining time the battery will last at the present motor speed. Should the battery capacity approach the low end, the motor speed is automatically reduced to increase efficiency and range. An optional second bank can function as a 'reserve' supply. Designed to be easy and fun to handle by novices and experienced boaters alike, the eCraft 20 speed and steering is controlled by a simple joystick. Options include a GPS chartplotter/fishfinder, a refrigerator, barbecue grill and interior courtesy lights. With the built in battery charger, re-charging is as simple as plugging the extension cable into a marina shorepower outlet or, if trailering, into any 115 Volt, 15 Amp household receptacle. Borrowing a style from many modern, performance sailboats, the eCraft 20 has an open transom design. Unique for a powerboat, this provides a swim platform that can be used for easy boarding from a dock and creates a
great space to cast a fishing line from. Forward of the platform, a step keeps the rest of the interior dry and secure. The two seats mounted over the step swivel 360 degrees to provide an aft facing view when desired.
