The Integrity Story
The Integrity 466/496 boats were literally conceived on a napkin. I know……you’ve heard that before, but it’s the truth. Jon Allsop and I were having breakfast at the Nan Hai Hotel in Sheku, China and were discussing the need for us to have a raised pilothouse trawler we could sell. We sketched out a few ideas on a napkin, then it suddenly occurred to us that we might be able to use the Island Gypsy 44 tooling, with a few modifications. The Island Gypsys, designed by Harvey Halvorsen, had a darn good reputation of being good “sea boats”. A high bow with moderate flare tended to throw the water to the side when in head seas and the longish keel made them pretty good in following seas.
We took our sketches to the shipyard, where we were having a 36’ Euro style trawler built and asked them if they would build it if we got the rest of the design work done. Of course they said “yes”.
Jon knew Bill Garden well enough to call him and ask if he could do the design work. Bill was getting on in years, mid nineties, if I recall and he declined our request. He did recommend John Anderson, a designer who had worked for Bill previously. When we contacted John, he liked the project and was keen to get started.
John suggested we raise the bulwarks, create an insert in the mold for a prop tunnel and come up with a new rudder design (NACA foil). Jon Allsop and I chose the John Deere 6125 engine at 450 horsepower to drive a 40”prop. The idea is to have a relatively slow turning engine (cruise around 1400 rpm) with high torque. The 6125 produces all of its horsepower at 2100 rpm. This choice proved to be spot on as the Integrity 466/496s will lumber along easily at 10 knots, burning about 10 gallons per hour. And to top it off, the noise levels are quite low. When you shift the ZF Mathers controls into gear, you know you have a smooth, powerful, drive train.
It was decided to make the boat a 2 stateroom boat but unlike many where the staterooms doors are in the same proximity, we chose to access the master by going down 3 steps out of the saloon/galley and access the guest stateroom through the pilothouse. Even though the staterooms are separated only by a (quiet) bulkhead, by accessing them from different parts of the boat, it gives those in each stateroom a real sense of privacy.
Rhapsody’s owners elected to install stabilizers as well as a hydraulic bow thruster and windlass. The thruster has a proportional control valve so you can easily control the amount of thrust. The hydraulic windlass insures you will have plenty of power to pull up the anchor.
Another neat feature the owner added was the Kabola hydronic heating system. I can’t say enough good things about these units. They are very quiet, extremely efficient, and are virtually trouble free. The boiler produces hot water, which is pumped to air handlers throughout the boat. It is very well balanced system that produces dry, comfortable heat.
A Nick Jackson davit system is on the back swimstep, making it easy to launch and retrieve the tender. Originally the tender was designed to be stored on the boat deck and launched with the mast and boom system. With the Nick Jackson system for the tender, the owenrs use the mast and boom to launch kayaks and lower crab pots down to the tender.
Rhapsody has a nice Furuno electronics system and includes radar and depth sounder. There are 2 screens that display data from 2 different plotters, one the Furuno, the other a computer based system. Works very well.
One feature often applauded is the seating arrangement in the pilothouse. The settee and table provide a great place to sit while underway and while in port or at anchor, a cozy spot to curl up with a book.
Owners elected to not have built-in furniture, but rather stand-alone convertible sofa and 2 barrel chairs. These are Flex Steel. If you aren’t familiar with Flex Steel, it is very high end Boat, RV and home furniture. The sofa is a soft blue Ultra Leather and the barrel chairs are beige.
All-in-all, Rhapsody is a wonderful, seaworthy boat that will give her new owners years of safe, comfortable cruising.
