Cat Maudy is a sailors cat, designed for the sailing romantic who prefers speed over luxury, discovering destinations & travels over the floating dock-condo, and minimalist features where less is a badge of honor.
Ocean traveled and tested, Cat Maudy affords an exceptionally stable ride even in roiling seas, thanks to her beamy stature (28’ beam) and 44’ length. Her sails, which can be triple reefed, propel her hulls – made of a light foam core construction - to glide over the surface like the fins on a fish. Her rudders flip up in shallow waters - avoiding breakage. Her sleek build (a signature Shuttleworth hull knuckle design), light (foam core design with a single daggerboard that can drop up to 8’) and fractional rig combine to create a stealth-like, stable sailing experience in both heavy and light air.
In the owner’s words:“…we found ourselves 15 miles offshore and 50 nautical miles to the nearest inlet (Beaufort, NC), when an uninvited 40 knot gale from the south ended our leisurely 7 knot sail in 10 knots of light air while gliding over 2 foot seas -- befriended by dolphins. The seas rock-climbed to 15 feet and we reefed Cat Maudy down (3rd reef) with just enough sail to steer. While we careened down the waves surfing at 18 knots, we arrived at Beaufort in surly record time (averaging 14 knots). Once inside the protected waters we returned to our storm-interrupted breakfast, only to notice our coffee cups -- resting in the cockpit -- were still filled with coffee. Not a drop had spilled. We looked inside the salon, to find our tuxedo cat, Soxy, staring at us, seemingly unconcerned with the weather or the seas. She yawned before putting her head down and returned to sleep...”
Cat Maudy's size also translates to versatile travel options - for both the sailor who prefers blue water, and those who prefer the leisurely speeds along the inside passage of the US east coast. Her air draft of 63' allows her to travel via the ICW ducking under the 65' fixed bridges and even under the Wilkerson 64' bridge in North Carolina without issue. Only on two occasions (near Lake Worth, FL and before entering Cape Fear River, NC) did the owners wait to time passage with lower tides.
Cat Maudy was built in 2000 – in Germany. She crossed the Atlantic in her maiden voyage by the original owner and spent several years sailing and traveling among the islands of the Caribbean. Her second owner brought her to Florida, where she sailed for several more years in the Gulf of Mexico before the current owner (a Wharram Catamaran boat-builder with extensive sailing experience) purchased her in 2006. She has sailed multiple tours up and down the US eastern seaboard by the current owner during the fall and spring, and spent her summers sailing in the Chesapeake Bay. Her salon windows were replaced in 2009 with custom fabricated thermal annealed acrylic, and four Lewmar Ocean series hatches were added in the salon to enhance air-flow and overall comfort. She had extensive upgrades completed between 2009 and 2014 -- between travels – new electronics, main and jib sails replaced, new tri-color light, 3 solar panels installed, new dinghy davits, new hard top bimini, windlass, rigging replaced, props rebuilt, hydraulics upgraded, hulls and superstructure painted, rams replaced and regular servicing of diesels and sail drives. The current owners sailed her through May, 2015.
Cat Maudy rests on the hard in Georgetown, Maryland, USA – since June 2015 (just over 1 year). Cat Maudy has been prepped to return to the water -- her superstructure has been pressure-washed and her hull bottoms (below the waterline) were sanded by the marina in June, 2016. For the sailor who wants to head south for the winter -- with a coat of bottom paint and new house batteries -- she is ready to be launched and return to sailing. Cosmetic touch-ups can be made at the discretion of the buyer – none of which impacts her performance. She is being sold “As Is”.
Cat Maudy is perfect for a couple, or family that appreciates knowing their boat has been blue water “battle” tested, the freedom of a minimalist lifestyle, enjoys the notion of sailing and traveling without the hum of a motor, and wants peace of mind knowing that the boat can handle the seas.
Final note: The current owner / seller is delighted to meet with any serious potential buyer (and/or their brokers, surveyors etc. if/as desired) at the boatyard to discuss and impart expert knowledge of Cat Maudy's operations / systems / experiences.
