The Oyster 45 was conceived as a worthy successor to the Oyster 435, offering improved performance and much better accommodation. Our experience in building around sixty 435s was fully evaluated at the design stage of the Oyster 45 to achieve the best package of features in a vessel of this size. The result is a yacht which has the sailing performance and accommodation of many much larger vessels. Like most Oysters, the 45 features a low center of gravity, high performance, and bulb keel which - linked with the excellent form stability generated by her hull lines - gives the Oyster 45 stability and sail-carrying power that makes her both fast and comfortable. Fairly full forward hull lines combine to allow exceptional interior accommodation in the forward area, but more importantly to give good buoyancy forward, helping to keep the yacht and crew dry when sailing. The Oyster 45 has very good performance to windward, particularly when sporting the efficient fully-battened sail plan illustrated. The standard engine is a 59 hp Volvo with saildrive unit, which we have used with great success on several yachts that have given trouble-free service for many years. Handling under power is predictable and the yacht's relatively tight turning circle makes maneuvering easy. The vessel's main storage area is on the starboard side amidships, where a large walk in store may be accessed via a door opening from the deck saloon, and also from the cockpit via a large locker lid. This voluminous space is fitted out with hooks for oilskin stowage and also provides an ideal installation space for additional equipment, such as warm air heating, battery chargers, inverters, and so forth. This machinery room - gear store also allows very good engine access via a large hinged engine room door. A self draining propane gas locker is fitted in the aft deck and an optional foredeck stowage locker is also offered. The Oyster 45's internal layout makes the best use of the center cockpit feature, facilitating excellent amidships accommodation and a really spacious owner's stateroom aft. There is a large walkthrough galley, with lots of counter space, gained by neatly utilizing some of the space between cockpit and engine room. There is plenty of stowage space for provisions and utensils, including the specially commissioned Wedgwood dinner service, which comes as standard. As one would expect on an Oyster, the layout is equally practical in harbor or at sea in rough weather. The light and roomy saloon makes full use of the yacht's 14-foot beam and incorporates a pair of opening hullports for fair weather athwartships ventilation. The forward deck saloon windows also open, giving unbeatable natural ventilation in suitable conditions. The saloon table is easily large enough for four to six people. It has two identical leaves hinged on the centerline so, when required, one leaf can fold out across the boat, making a really spacious dining area with plenty of space for eight or more place settings. It's the forward area of the 45 which sets her apart from most yachts in this size range. Computer-aided design has enabled our architects to optimize the yacht's forward sections for maximum accommodation, without compromising performance.
