Abenaki is a one-of-a-kind trawler with a very traditional “down east” look and feel. To step aboard this classic is to return to an era when naval design featured rugged construction along with a practical layout for long term cruising. The Herreshoff-like interior is light, airy and uncluttered with traditional white walls and mahogany trim. With its bronze opening ports and cowl vents to its stabilizer poles with paravanes, the boat pays tribute to its heritage as a fishing vessel. Yet, mechanicals and electricals are all modern.
From a stock 1979 Willard hull this boat was customized in 1995 to highest standards. A heavy displacement vessel, it is a very stable boat in rough seas with 2500 lbs of encapsulated lead ballast in the keel with extra layers of fiberglass in the bilge area for rigidity.
Clean unobstructive decks. Anchor on bow with electric windlass, followed by enough deck for a couple of chairs.
Separate controls with a helmsman’s seat on top of pilothouse. The 10-foot folding mast contains lights and the radar. The aft deck contains two lockers, one for the propane tank, with enough room for three chairs.
Teak boarding platform with ladder
The engine is way forward, just in front of the wheelhouse. This allows for full walk around headroom plus ample storage. Access is through a port door in the wheelhouse. The wheelhouse is spacious with three large windows forward, each with it own windshield wiper plus full height opening doors port and starboard. The helm is centered with instruments on either side. Two cushioned settees are aft both with footrests and storage lockers underneath. A single opening port centered aft provides additional light and visibility. A double electrical control panel, AC and DC, is mounted on the bulkhead.
A companionway on center leads down three steps to a large airy trunk cabin with berths for two and an additional one from a dining room table. The is a hanging locker on the starboard side, bookshelves on the port side followed by an enclosed head with sink, vanity and shower and hot and cold running water. Aft is the galley with a two-burner propane stove, shelf, under counter storage, sink with manual foot pedal and running hot/cold water. Next is an under the counter refrigerator with a small freezer unit.
The two bunks after feature custom mattresses 40x80 inches, extremely generous for a boat this size. Each bunk has its own lighting and storage underneath. Double doors open to the aft deck.
