The Nimble 30 was designed for pleasure, sailing enjoyment, visual charm, human comfort and pride of ownership. From the drawing board, the goal was a yacht that would look right, feel good, and sail well. These three requirements translated into a glorious boat topside with a modern underbody, a boat designed for pure enjoyment and solid performance.
The vessel was originally sold on the Chesapeake Bay, went north to New Jersey for a while, went back to the Chesapeake for several years, then in 2008 the current owner purchased her in Annapolis, then trucked her to Portland, Oregon, where she has been sailed exclusively in fresh water on the Columbia River.
Primarily used for day sailing, she 'has probably less than 250 hours on her Yanmar 2 cylinder 18 HP diesel.
The hull of the Nimble 30 reflects the latest thought process in cruising hull design. She is strongly built yet able to carry a sufficient load of crew and stores. Even with 2700 pounds added, she'll still yield exciting sailing performance and speed. 6.0 knots is easily attained in only moderate wind, a speed unique to a traditionally styled vessel. A canoe stern hull was chosen not only for its great beauty but it has been said that this is one of the safest designs as the stern will assist in parting breaking waves in rough seas. The Nimble 30 has a graceful whale stripe, which not only adds strength but allows for installation of a proper rub rail.
The Nimble 30 is hand laid up employing core construction, using state of the art biaxial and triaxial fiberglass. This allows lightweight yet incredible strength. All structural bulkheads are glassed to the hull and mechanically fastened. Even the floors are individually fiberglassed to the hull. The rudder is built with a steel skeleton covered in glass along with a 1-1/2" stainless steel stock. The centerboard version has a shaped board with a pennant attached above the water line. When the board is up, it fits into a mated slot, thus virtually eliminating turbulence.
The cockpit of a sailboat must serve a multitude of needs. Not only is it the control center of the boat, it must provide easy access to the decks and cabin below, a safe and comfortable haven in rough seas, and an excellent entertaining space both underway and at anchor.
The Nimble 30 cockpit has a deep foot well for sure footing when heeled, high and wide coamings for comfort and protection from the elements, and excellent drainage.
The mainsheet and jib sheet are easily accessed for single-handed sailing.
From a safety standpoint, there is ample storage for life jackets and other safety gear, all within arm's reach from the helm should the need arise.
There are two lockers and small lazarette locker in the cockpit.
For comfort, the cockpit benches are 6'4" long and slightly canted for sleeping comfort while underway.
The Nimble 30 deck is traditional in appearance but highly functional in design.
The anchor locker is large and self-draining with recessed hinges and a lock.
The forward berth has a large opening hatch for comfort at anchor.
She has six bronze elliptical opening ports and an opening skylight over the main salon.
Thoughtful design prevails as the coach roof sides are canted 5 degrees with ports having a 10 degree spigot so that no water can enter when they are open.
The decks are built on a 24" radius to promote good footing and excellent drainage in wet weather.
Non-skid surfaces abound, enhanced on the coach roof for added safety and sure footing.
All heavy-duty cleats and latches are through-bolted with backing plates.
The deck is cored and from a one-piece mold.
The hull-to-deck joint is mechanically fastened on five-inch centers with marine 3M 5200 adhesive sealant.
The toe rail is anodized aluminum.
The Nimble 30 rig is constructed with 6000 series high strength aluminum. She carries a Bermuda mainsail with a full hoist jib. The sails are in excellent condition. The single spreader spar is keel stepped. Standing rigging is 1x19 stainless steel with a ¼" forestay.
Teak and thoughtful finish details abound for a traditional look and feel. The Nimble 30 has full standing headroom, as high as 6'-2" in some areas. Ventilation is ample with six opening ports, two opening hatches, and a large companionway hatch. Her warm interior is enhanced by lots of teak, a traditional skylight, and her teak and holly sole. She sleeps two forward in the owner's cabin with a 6' 4" long berth, one to port on the salon settee and two to starboard. There is a hanging locker as well as a foul weather gear wet locker. All cabinetry has smooth rounded edges.
The galley has a generous working area which includes a well super-insulated ice box, a large sink w/hot and cold pressurized water, a top quality alcohol stove and ample cabinet storage for supplies.
The head, which faces fore and aft (a crucial layout for use underway), has a molded shower pan, ventilation and storage.
This yacht is equipped with the upgraded Yanmar 2GM 18 HP diesel engine. She propels at 6.5 knots with ease. The engine is easily accessed from the main salon beneath the companionway stairs as well as a removable hatch panel in the floor of the cockpit. Maintenance is easy. Access to the transmission, stuffing box and drive shaft is easy.
