“Luna” is a distinctive and stately twin screw wooden motorsailor built in 1941 by Astillero Ortholan in Argentina to naval architect Manuel Campos’ design. She is built from Lapacho, an extremely dense and rot resistant wood. Her pilothouse and salon are fitted with large windows allowing natural light to shine on her magnificent hardwood interior. The current owner received a Jones Act waiver by the United States congress allowing “Luna” to carry passengers for hire between U.S. ports. Considerable work was also done towards obtaining a USCG Certificate of Inspection with the goal of carrying up to 49 passengers. The American Bureau of Shipping has measured Registered Length at 64.96 feet. “Luna” would make a superb charter vessel, or private yacht.
“Luna” has received periodic refits over the years including a major refit in 1990 by Knight & Carver in San Diego. A major systems refit and pilothouse reconfiguration was just completed. A comprehensive electrical system upgrade, new engine exhaust systems, installation of modern PEX plumbing, updated chartplotter/radar, new 15kw genset, bow thruster, new electric heads, and additional stainless steel portlights to name just a few. “Luna” was recently hauled for bottom paint, bow thruster installation, and survey at Port Townsend Shipwright’s Coop. Respected northwest surveyor Matt Harris inspected “Luna” during this May 2016 haulout and the survey report is available by request.

The raised pilothouse is entered through one of three doors: a hinge door offset to port on the aft deck or through two sliding side doors. Full 360 degree visibility through an array of tinted safety glass windows affords spectacular views. The three doors and four opening stainless steel ports located high up under the protection of the overhanging cabin top, provide ample ventilation. Three fixed, stainless steel framed overhead ports allow additional light and views of the mainsail from the inside helm. The cabin sole is varnished solid teak and holly. The entire space is built out of beautiful varnished hardwoods including mahogany and teak. Lounging settees wrap around the aft pilothouse and seat seven in tastefully upholstered sculpted cushions. Storage for lifejackets and other gear is found in top opening bins beneath the settee.
A five foot wide helm seat is located forward. A 37” wide by 56” long teak table hinges and folds up against the helm seat back. This can be used for paper chart work or setting aside a spread of food and drinks while entertaining. Three long sliding drawers are found an each side of the helm seat. The stainless steel and varnished wood 25” diameter inside helm is offset slightly to starboard for straight ahead line of sight the right of the main mast. Engine, navigation, and communications instruments are well placed around the helm station. The AC/DC switch breaker panel is to starboard and forward concealed behind smoked acrylic doors. The cabintop overhangs all windows to reduce glare and rain water. Headroom measures 6’ 3” throughout the pilothouse.
From the pilothouse, one proceeds five steps down a short ladder to the salon. Two large fixed ports on each side and two stainless steel fixed ports forward allow ample natural light and views into this lounging area. This spacious 12’ wide by 11’ long area has “L” shaped settees to port forward and to starboard aft. Top opening storage bins are beneath the seats. A beige carpet with black flecks covers the cabin sole. Three halogen spot lights are on the aft bulkhed and two lamps with stained glass shades are forward. Headroom measure 6’ 2” in the salon.
The engine space is below the salon. Foam padding with lead/rubber helps attenuate noise and heat propagation into the living spaces. Removable centerline panels in the salon sole access a walkway between the two main propulsion engines. A new Mastervolt 12KW genset is in a sound enclosure aft and to port. Diesel saddle tanks are well outboard of the engines with space to access between then tanks and engine sides. 12V lighting system illuminates this space. Auxillary equipment is place around this machinery space.
The dining area is down four steps from the salon. A large teak with holly inlay “L”-shaped and rounded dining table measures 68” long by 56” wide. Seating for nine is found in the wrapping settee to port. Double door cabinets with smoked acrylic, wood-trimmed doors flank a round hull side port set in varnished cedar hull side staving. Storage bins are found under the settee and behind the port side settee back. To starboard is a large pantry. Below the wide fiddled counter are four drawers and a lower double door cabinet. A double door cabinet smoked acrylic doors is forward, beneath the deck edge. An Emerson microwave oven is aft of this cabinet and a top opening bottle locker is inboard and aft of the countertop. Aft and to starboard of the access stairs is a storage closet with shelves. The varnished box section mainmast base is on centerline and forward; a nice reminder that this is indeed a sailing ship. Headroom is very generous in this dining area with a minimum measurement of 6’ 7” below the lowest deck beam. Natural light filters down from aft and the open salon above. Two round opening hull side ports and a combination of dome, box, and sconce complete the natural and night lighting to this elegant dining area. A wide bookshelf on the aft, partial bookhead will hold volumes of reading to while away the off watch hours.
The galley is forward of the salon and painted white with varnished wood trim. Entrance is to starboard of the main mast. A wide pass through with 8-1/2” wide wood shelf connects the dining area to the galley. To starboard, an electric Princess three burner stove with oven is aft. A dish cabinet with sliding doors is outboard, above the stove and below an open shelf. Hull side cedar staving is finished natural and broken in way of the two round opening port holes. Pot and pan storage is found in cabinets forward and beneath the oven. A large, double door, stainless steel lined 9.3 cubic foot refrigerator sits atop a single door 5 cubic foot freezer. To port is an “L” shaped counter with storage cabinets beneath and a double stainless steel sink outboard. A dish rack is outboard of the sink, below the hull side cedar staving and two round port holes. To starboard and forward a massive, thickly insulated top opening freezer box will store enough meats, chicken, fish and other frozen supplies to feed the entire crew on an ocean crossing.
The crew area is forward of the galley. Two single berths in a “V” configuration sit atop a bank of six drawers. Open storage shelves run along the hull on each side above the berths. A spill pipe leads the anchor chain from the bow down to the chain mangers beneath the “V”-berth. A double scuttle hatch with smoked acrylic lenses shared between the galley and crew area allows light, ventilation and emergency access to deck. Overhead dome lights illuminate the galley and crew area at night.
The staterooms are aft and accessed along a passageway slightly to port of center, and down four steps from the salon. The plywood cabin sole is painted light grey and a beige/black carpet runner is fitted in the passageway. Headroom generally measures 6’ 3” in the sateroom area.
Starting forward to port is a stateroom with single bunk, hanging locker, and nightstand with two drawers. An overhead dome light and reading light illuminate this space. Two opening rectangular ports are fitted to the cabin side above the berth. The berth measures 6’ long by 34” wide. A plastic water tank is located below the bunk. To starboard, forward is a stateroom with a double bunk measuring 6’ 2” long by 52” wide. Two hinged door storage cabinets are outboard beneath the deck edge. A privacy door closes the stateroom from the passageway. Two sliding drawers are located below the bunk with a plastic water tank further outboard beneath the bunk. Aft and inboard is locking door accessing a guest head. A dressing mirror is fastened to the door. A third guest stateroom with single berth is further aft to port. A hanging locker, night stand with two drawers and four hinged storage cabinets above and outboard of the bunk contain ample storage. Two opening ports in the cabin side are above the bunk. The bunk measures 6’ 6” long by 34” wide and would be the choice for a tall crewmember. Top opening storage bins are beneath the bunk.
The guest head is to starboard and fitted with a marble sink set in a small vanity, a mirrored medicine cabinet, an electric flush head, and storage hinged door storage cabinets outboard, beneath the deck edge. Towel bars, towel rings, a task light over the mirror and opening cabin side port finish this space. Access is through either a locking privacy door in the passageway or from the double guest stateroom forward of the head.
The owner’s head is ensuiteand to starboard just aft of the privacy door in the passageway. A second locking privacy door closes the head from the stateroom proper. A larger vanity with marble sink, mirrored double door medicine cabinet, and electric flush head are along the aft bulkhead. Forward and outboard is a tub with shower head. A cabin side opening port is above a double door cabinet with shelves located below the side deck. Towel bar, 110V outlets, and task light above the mirror complete this head compartment.
The master stateroom is all the way aft, at the end of the passageway. Two full sized mirror faced doors open up to a large cedar lined closed to port all the way forward, just inside the master stateroom door. Aft and to port is an elegant “U” shaped, rounded settee with sculpted upholstered cushions. An open bookshelf is outboard and beneath two opening cabin side ports. Storage bins are below the seat cushions. Aft, on centerline is a chest of three drawers atop a hinged double door locker. An open shelf runs full beam along the aft bulkhead. A double berth is to starboard and measures 6’ 8” long by 5’ wide forward tapering to 3’ 10” aft. An open bookshelf is outboard beneath the side deck. Three large sliding drawers are beneath the bed, An open shelf with bulkhead mounted mirror is forward. Two hinged double door lockers are forward, up high above the bed. Two opening ports are located above the bunk in the trunk cabin side. An emergency escape and ventilation hatch is aft, on centerline in the trunk cabin. Reading lights, a large ornate lamp aft, and three sconce lights illuminate this cabin at night.
“Luna” was built in 1941 in Argentina by Astillero Ortholan. Make no mistake, this is a wood boat and strongly built. Hull construction is an Argentinian native teak “Lapacho” which is extremely dense and rot resistant. Hull planking is carvel 1 ¾” thick fastened with iron nails to twinned sawn 4” by 2 ½” frames on 24” centers. Intermediate bent frames are copper riveted and measure 2”by 3”. Keel bolts and structural hardware is iron. Decks have two layers of 1-1/2” teak and sealed with Kiwigrip rubberized sealing/non-skid coating. The fore and aft cabintops are planked and coated while the new pilothouse is constructed of marine plywood. Deck beams are of tropical hardwood and well cambered. A long cast iron ballast keel and deeper welded steel keel run nearly full length. This box keel contains two fuel tanks.
“Luna” was hauled for inspection and bottom paint in May of 2016. She was inspected by Port Townsend Shipwrights coop and surveyor Matt Harris. All planking was found to be in good condition except for one plank which was replaced with Sapele.
“Luna” has a painted white hull with small groves at plank edges boldly identifying her carvel wood planking. Light blue antifouling paint was renewed during the May 2016 haul out in Pt. Townsend. A medium blue 3” tall bootstripe and 1” tall cove stripe accentuate the graceful hull lines. A rubrail with stainless steel cap protects hull sides. Ten round hull side port holes open for light and ventilation. The hull shape has rounded bilges, spoon bow, and traditional overhanging transom. Raised bulwarks are capped with 2 ½” wide varnished teak. Freeing ports allow deck water drainage on each side.
The Deck is expansive, protected and easily passaged. 30” high handrails with midlevel lifelines surround the deck for security. These rails are stainless steel tubing on the bow and transition to varnished teak 3” wide handrails from the mainmast aft. Hinged boarding gates are fitted on each side and on the stern. Blue/Grey rubberized non-skid paint covers the teak decking for ease of maintenance. Cabin sides are painted a semi-gloss cream color. Cabin structure trim is painted white. The foredeck is flush yet cambered to shed water with a generous spring to the sheer. Double, hinged 28” by 32” foredeck scuttle hatches are constructed of varnished teak and rubber with tinted stainless steel framed smoked acrylic lenses. Just forward of the mainmast, a 14”high trunk cabin runs aft for six feet to the four foot high by eight foot long salon cabin top. Aft of this the raised pilothouse is capped with an overhanging top extending out over the side decks for shelter and generously forward to visor the sloped forward pilothouse windows. This pilothouse top measures eight feet above the main deck. Stainless steel fashion plates support the aft outboard end and double as mizzen mast shroud chainplates. An 18” high aft trunk cabin extends 11’ aft of the pilothouse. This aft trunk cabin is topped with varnished teak and holy planking. A gorgeous, rounded “U”- shaped aft lounge/dinette table sits atop the trunk cabin and has enough seating for twelve guest. The table is fixed in place on stainless steel pedestals and fitted with low fiddles. Aft of the trunk cabin is the “working” area with sail handling winches, a steering pedestal, and 30” by 28” varnished teak and rubber stern locker hatch. The aft helm is a traditional chromed bronze pedestal with binnacle compass and varnished teak 42” diameter wheel.
“Luna” has a conservative ketch rig well configured for short-handed sailing. A furling genoa, hanked-on staysail with boom, mainsail with lazy bag, and mizzen sail with lazy bag along with sheets, furling lines, and winches on the aft deck help manage the press of canvas when sailing. Spars are varnished spruce with the mast tops and bottoms painted white. Blue yacht acrylic canvas sail bags and covers are in excellent condition. Stainless steel mast “granny bars” provide secure bracing when working at the main mast.
