Built by the Rice Brothers in Boothbay, Maine, Bandwagon is hull number 12. She is a one design knockabout, gaff rigged sloop, originally known as a Manchester 17 ½.
The class was originally designed in 1907 by B.B. Crowninshield for the Manchester (Massachusetts) Yacht Club. Success of the Manchester 17 ½ in Boston’s North Shore racing quickly let to the spread of the class. Yacht clubs on the Maine coast were responsible for the class’ growth in the 1920s and the fleet at Dark Harbor grew to over 40 boats. In all it is estimated that 200 of the class were built, the last in 1935.
She was originally donated to the Museum of Yachting (MoY) in 1992 and was a 1993 restoration Project of MoY and launched in the spring of 1994, joining the rest of the in-water collection. Prior to 1961, “Bandwagon” was known as “Hai Lung”, a Chinese Greeting.
